22 July 2004 - 11:31 a.m. M(r)s. P.Since JC asked, here's the scoop on the name change/ lack thereof. Granted, it's gotta be quick, since we're leaving for our honeymoon soon, but here's the official stance. -Legally and professionally, I am still Ms. Jpellecchia, and always will be. -Socially, there are certain advantages to being Mrs. Kprevas, mainly that I am lazy and forgot to tell most of the people I know that I was keeping my family name. So rather than correct them, I look at it as having a new nickname. In all seriousness, I wish patriarchy weren't so ingrained in our supposedly non-hierarchical society that everyone just assumes that a wedding ring means a new name. I also wish women didn't talk about becoming "a Mrs!" like it's right up there with being coronated Queen of England. That only works to put a subtle stain on the Misses and Ms.s out there who deserve just as much respect. On the other hand, it wouldn't be good or responsible feminism to bite the head off anyone who called me Mrs. kprevas, so if you have in the past, don't feel bad. But for future reference, I'd like to be Ms. jpellecchia to my friends. In a way, I'm still submitting to the male power structure, since Gus didn't want me to change my name, and I'm not. But I guess I have my whole life to tell him to stop co-opting my feminist anger.* *I am totally kidding. What I'm wearing: Hello Kitty tank top, pink pj bottoms.
